I wanted to improve my game and so I spent the money for a professional lesson. I didn't spend more than a couple of minutes before I felt like I'd wasted my money because the pro was giving me a major overhaul and I thought all I needed was a tune up. After the lesson, I talked with some people about the instructor and they seemed to agree that the pro has his way of doing things and that anything else is wrong.
I've since found a different pro and he's been outstanding because he evalulated what I'm currently doing and inquired as to what I expected to get out of the lessons. All I wanted to do was cut my handicap 3-5 strokes so I could enjoy the game a little more and so the pro gave me some minor adjustments which I was able to easily implement and the results have been just what I was looking for.
The short of it: ask around and do some investigative work in advance before you take lessons as it just might save you some money and frustration
